In 1887, Fullerton had a street called Placentia Avenue. When residents of a nearby town of the same name demanded that the street be renamed, it was changed to Northam Avenue.
When the city was incorporated in 1904, the name was changed again--to Chapman Avenue in honor of the first mayor, Charles C. Chapman.
