When the Red Car rail line reached Newport Beach in August, 1905, residents hoped the new train route would revitalize the town.
The city’s economic mainstay, the McFadden Wharf, was in decline. But the train did not yet go to new subdivisions in Balboa, where developers still relied on barges to deliver building materials.
