Irvine Upsets No. 10 Pepperdine

Unranked UC Irvine beat No. 10 Pepperdine in five games in the championship match of the First Serve men’s volleyball tournament Sunday at UC Irvine.

Jon Habben and Chris Harger each had 16 kills for UC Irvine, which won, 5-15, 15-11, 15-10, 3-15, 15-11.

Corey Hinkle added 62 assists and John Arata had seven blocks for UC Irvine (4-0).

Kevin Barnett had 22 kills for Pepperdine (3-1).

San Diego State beat Loyola Marymount, 15-11, 15-6, 16-14, in the third-place match.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

New Mexico State 51, UC Irvine 48--Kim Barfield had 13 points and Ja’net Davis had 12 for Long Beach State (5-7, 2-3).

The 49ers trailed, 28-24, at the half but shot 27% (nine of 34) in the second half. Long Beach State shot 32% (19 of 60) from the field for the game.

Anita Maxwell had 18 points and Shrae Johnson had 12 for New Mexico State.
