Knee Injury Ends Season for Scyphers

Mike Scyphers, Simi Valley High’s former baseball coach, earlier this month had his promising college basketball officiating season ended by a knee injury.

Scyphers tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee while working a game Feb. 10 at the University of San Francisco. He is scheduled to have surgery this week.

Scyphers, who worked the National Invitation Tournament last season, was considered a prospect for this year’s NCAA tournament.

Soccer

St. Francis High midfielder Pete Vagenas has committed to UCLA. Vagenas, an All-American last season, also considered UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine.

Louisville High midfielder Kim Daws, who will play at Duke next season, has been named to the Parade magazine All-American high school girls’ team.

Football

Steve Brooks, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end/long snapper from Buena High and Occidental College, has signed a contract with the Frankfurt Galaxy of the World League of American Football.

Baseball

The Cal State Northridge game against USC that was canceled Wednesday because of rain will not be replayed. Instead, the Matadors will play a doubleheader next Wednesday at home against Cal Baptist.

Basketball

Steve Eernisse, a 6-5, 230-pound junior center who averaged 20 points and 8.7 rebounds at Palmdale High, has transferred to Canyon.

Robert Fields has resigned as coach of the Antelope Valley High girls’ team.
