So Much for Kennedy Against So-So Westlake

The Westlake High baseball team, mired in a mediocre start, pulled off a 7-6 upset of Kennedy, ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times, in the San Fernando Valley tournament Saturday at Westlake.
The Warriors (3-3) scored three runs in the fifth inning to erase a 5-4 deficit. Catcher Mike McHargue’s two-out single off Jon Garland scored Steve Udell from second base. Tyler Kostjuik singled home McHargue and Matt Riordan to give Westlake a 7-5 lead.
Tim Carr (1-0) pitched a complete game, limiting the Golden Cougars (4-1) to five hits, striking out nine.
In other San Fernando Valley tournament games:
Calabasas 7, Cleveland 1--Eric Eisner (1-0) pitched a complete game as the Coyotes (2-1-1) trounced the Cavaliers (4-1) at Cleveland. Darin Reisman had three hits for Calabasas.
Poly 9, Franklin 0--Jay Heredia had seven strikeouts in five innings for the Parrots. Travis McGivern was three for four with three RBIs for Poly (3-1-1).
El Camino Real 5, Agoura 3--Ben Cliffords sparked a five-run second inning for the Conquistadores (4-1) with a two-run home run at El Camino Real.
Chatsworth 4, Buena 1--Reliever Erick Buitrago worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the sixth and went on to earn the save for the Chancellors (5-0) in the Red Division final of the Westside tournament.
In other Westside tournament games:
Camarillo 10, San Pedro 0--Starting pitcher Mike Corral (1-1) went five innings for the victory. Joe Borchard had two hits and two runs batted in for the Scorpions (4-1).
Saugus 13, Westchester 3--Nate Wright had three hits, including a double, drove in three runs and scored three for the Centurions (3-2) at Westchester.
Derek Lyons had two hits and three RBIs, and Brent Pellico had two hits, two RBIs and scored two runs for Saugus.
Hart 10, Rio Mesa 6--Brian Hernandez (1-0) pitched the last four innings, allowing one hit and striking out four for the Indians (3-2) at Hart.
Crespi 10, El Segundo 9--Chris Crawley scored on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth to put the Celts (3-2) ahead to stay in the seventh-place game of the El Segundo tournament. Crawley and Brian Luderer each had three hits.
Bell Gardens 2, Simi Valley 1--Scott Bermette and Billy Castonguay combined on a one-hitter, but the visiting Pioneers (3-1-1) lost the El Segundo tournament consolation championship.
SOFTBALL
Thousand Oaks 4-9, Moorpark 1-0--Jennifer Sharron threw a perfect game in the second game after pitching a two-hitter in the first for the Lancers in a nonleague doubleheader at Moorpark.
The left-handed junior (2-0) struck out 12 in each game. Moorpark’s only run was unearned. Justin Rachlin was five for eight for Thousand Oaks (2-0).
Camarillo 14, Quartz Hill 0--The Scorpions (4-0) captured the championship of the Hart tournament after beating El Camino Real earlier in the day, 5-0. Cindy Ball threw a two-hitter, striking out 15.
Mandi Comer homered in each game for Camarillo and had three RBIs against Quartz Hill.
Tournament MVP Melanie Richardson threw a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts against El Camino Real.
Newbury Park 8, Downey 0--Candace Roberts had a home run, double and four RBIs for the Panthers in a Downey tournament semifinal at South Gate Park. Kristi Fox pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts and two walks.
