Measure S Supporters to Canvass for Votes

Led by local officials, including Mayor Patricia C. Bates, supporters of antiairport Measure S will gather at City Hall on Saturday and canvass the southern part of the city urging people to vote for the ballot initiative in the March 26 election.
“This is about getting people here to vote,” said Denny Harris, co-chair of Taxpayers for Responsible Planning, a group of residents organizing the event.
“Over 90% of the residents here are opposed to the airport, Harris said. “We know if we get everyone in South County to vote, Measure S will succeed.”
The ballot initiative would overturn 1994’s Measure A, which calls for an airport at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station after the military vacates the site in 1999.
Saturday’s walk, which will start at 9 a.m. at City Hall, 27801 La Paz Road, also aims to “raise the level of interest in this election,” Harris said. “There are other worthy topics on the ballot” besides Measure S.
