Tentative Pact Reached in Oakland Teachers Strike

OAKLAND — The school board approved a tentative contract settlement with the city’s teachers Monday that could end a walkout that has affected about 40,000 students for more than a month.
The Oakland Education Assn. was scheduled to vote today on the contract, which also affects school counselors, psychologists and librarians in the state’s sixth-largest school district. The tentative agreement was announced earlier Monday.
Union members walked out Feb. 15 after working without a contract for more than a year. The main obstacles to a settlement have been disagreements over class size, salaries and the early retirement program.
“This [settlement] is good for the teachers of Oakland as well as for the parents in the community who have supported us,” said union Vice President Isaiah Alvarado.
If the union approves the settlement, classes could resume as soon as Wednesday, union President Ben Visnick said.
