RJR Nabisco to Test Market Low-Smoke Brand: The tobacco company will begin testing a marketing approach next month for its Eclipse reduced-smoke cigarettes. RJR Nabisco Holdings Corp.’s R.J. Reynolds Tobacco unit will give volunteers in Chattanooga, Tenn., and Germany a supply of Eclipse and Eclipse menthol cigarettes and ask them about possible advertising slogans. RJR has been working on Eclipse for more than three years, since it pulled the plug on a $300-million project that developed a smokeless cigarette with unsatisfactory taste. Eclipse cigarettes has about the same amount of nicotine as ultra-low-tar varieties. U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials said they need more information before they can decide if they have the authority to control its use.
