National Semiconductor Plans Internet Products: In one of the first uses of the popular Java Internet software outside of computers, National Semiconductor Corp. said it will use Sun Microsystems Inc.’s Java to create Internet-ready communications devices. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based computer chip maker plans to embed the Java operating system into chips used to build phones and devices that can readily access the Net. Its first product will be a telephone, which National Semiconductor is jointly designing with its recent spinoff InfoGear Technology Corp. The arrangement is a first for National Semiconductor, which hasn’t ventured beyond its analog and mixed-signal chip product lines in years, and for Sun Microsystems’ JavaSoft unit, which is rapidly licensing its Java but mostly to computer makers.
