In a setback for the owners of the Santa Anita racetrack, an initiative drawn up to block the Arcadia facility from building an entertainment complex in its south parking lot has qualified for the ballot, City Clerk June Alford said Tuesday.
Neighbors for Arcadia, a citizens group, collected 4,018 signatures on the initiative petition, 125 more than needed to qualify for the ballot, Alford said.
The initiative would require any changes to the track’s current designated land use to be approved by voters. Owners of the track had hoped to build a multimillion dollar complex similar to Irvine’s Spectrum Entertainment Center. “It’s now the people’s decision,” said Robert Ellison, leader of citizen’s group.
