COSTA MESA — A man brandishing a shotgun walked into a liquor store and took five people hostage in an apparent attempt to force a confrontation with police Friday.
Tommy Wayne Rush, 35, of Santa Ana was arrested a short time later without incident on suspicion of armed robbery, Lt. Ron Smith said.
Witnesses said the gunman entered the store at Monrovia Avenue and 19th Street about 6:30 p.m. and casually told employees to call police, Smith said. He also said he wanted police to kill him and that he might have to shoot someone to be arrested, according to witness accounts.
The gunman surrendered about an hour later, with no injuries or shots fired, officials said.
