Intern Teachers

In response to the negative letters (July 17) opposing the use of untrained teachers in California classrooms: While it may not be ideal to put an untrained teacher in a classroom, let me follow this by stating that I am entering L.A. Unified School District’s intern program to teach at the elementary level.
I have a bachelor’s in history from UCLA, an MBA from Loyola and I ran a small business for over nine years. I also volunteered (on a weekly basis) in a kindergarten classroom for a year.
In order to get into the internship program, I had to pass the CBEST and also the very difficult Multiple Subject Assessment Test (MSAT). Furthermore, you are not just put into a classroom but trained and guided for two years while you obtain your credential.
If the reality is that there are not enough teachers, then at least put a person with my background in the classroom. I promise I won’t endanger the future of your children!
