Out of the Action
Oxnard boxer Fernando Vargas lost his Olympic bid Thursday in a controversial match (S4). Romanian Marian Simion defeated Vargas 8-7, bringing the U.S. record to 9-3. . . . Despite the loss, acquaintances were proud Vargas made it as far as he did (B1). “He got robbed,” said 12-year-old boxer Adrian Castellon Jr. of Oxnard. . . . “Being at the Olympics--man, I think it’s a long way to go to the Olympics! He tried.”
Lost Village
Archeologists are excited over the discovery of a fishing camp near Point Mugu (B1). The camp, which in its heyday was popular with Hollywood types, had been forgotten until the winter storms of 1995 pummeled beach-side buildings constructed on top of the site. . . . Items turned up by archeologists include old sake bottles, rice bowls, pieces of hurricane lamps and the remains of a communal bath.
Medical Brouhaha
The long-pending sale of Westlake Medical Center to Salick Health Care has finally been completed, but not without a fight over whether representatives of the seller were careless in removing supplies (B1). . . . Salick says the previous owner, Columbia/HCA, contaminated operating rooms during the changeover. Columbia denies the accusation.
