Money Raised for Burned Churches

Members of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Fullerton have raised more than $2,500 to assist churches in the South that have been hit recently by arsonists.

“Burned churches are like graffiti,” said the Rev. Jon Dobrer of the Fullerton church. “We cannot give the perpetrators the satisfaction of seeing the results of their work.”

The money went to the national Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, Washington Quaker Workcamps and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, groups providing labor and materials to restore some of the rural churches in Alabama.

Church officials said the service committee recently began a new program called Just Works, which involves placing interns, volunteers and youths with groups and organizations that address the suffering caused by economic and social injustices.
