Freshmen Make Big Impression

Incoming freshmen got their first look at college football Tuesday at UCLA, and it wasn’t what some expected.

“Some of them got a little heavier over the summer,” Coach Bob Toledo said after the first of three days of two-a-day workouts for scholarship freshmen and some walk-ons.

“I think they figured that they had to put on weight for college ball.”

Much of the excess will drain away when the full squad begins workouts Saturday and when pads are donned next Wednesday.

There was one notable exception to the weight rule. Durrell Price, from Sylmar and twice the city player of the year as a running back, has lost 20 pounds, to 210. Advertised in high school as a 215-pounder, he frequently played at 230, but lost the weight in anticipation of getting a long look at a position in which there is a lack of returning depth.

Returning assistant coaches from the staff of retired coach Terry Donahue are Gary Bernardi, who coaches tight ends, helps with the offensive line and is the recruiting coordinator; Ron Caragher, who was a graduate assistant under Donahue and is a full-time receiver coach now; Bob Field, formerly the defensive coordinator and now the assistant head coach and coach of strong safeties; and Terry Tumey, the defensive line coach.
