Shakespeare Orange County is going for a change of pace from the Bard’s canon, mounting a production of Moliere’s “Tartuffe.” This scathing 17th century comedy about religious hypocrisy, starring Ron Campbell in the title role, previews tonight and opens Friday at Chapman University’s Waltmar Theatre in Orange.
The plot involves a a swindler who cons a rich, middle-aged fool out of his fortune and tries to seduce his wife. When “Tartuffe” premiered in 1664 at Versailles, it had to be withdrawn. The church denounced a revised version three years later, and the play was banned until 1669.

Pop
On the list of guitar players’ guitar players, Duke Robillard ranks high--not least because he can play virtually everything in blues and roots-rock styles and branch comfortably into jazzy swing as well.
Robillard’s solo recording career has touched on all of those modes, and he delivers his solid original material in a friendly, emphatic voice. His dossier also includes founding the venerable Roomful of Blues back in ‘68, putting in a hitch as Jimmie Vaughan’s handpicked replacement in the Fabulous Thunderbirds and, more recently, collaborating with trad-blues ace John Hammond for tours and recording sessions. An amazing player.

Comedy
Much has been made about Bobby Slayton being the “pit bull of comedy” (it’s better than being the “French poodle of comedy,” he responds), but overlooked in that quick and easy moniker is that Slayton is on stage to have fun. If that means insulting a few people, he says, so be it. The “Tonight Show” and “Arsenio” veteran is far from politically correct, but his wide-ranging, high-energy routine does have something for everybody.
* Who: Bobby Slayton.
* When: 8:30 tonight, 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. Friday, 8 and 10:30 p.m. Saturday, 8 p.m. Sunday.

Family Affair
“Killer Dana” sounds like a slasher film, but it’s really a term of endearment. That’s how surfers in the 1950s and early ‘60s described the surfing break in the former Dana Cove, site of monster waves and half-mile rides.
With the 1966 birth of Dana Point Harbor, Killer Dana and the cove became history. Was the harbor a good move? In a 90-minute Killer Dana Cruise on board the R/V Sea Explorer, visitors learn about the area’s past and present through hands-on activities, then decide for themselves whether the harbor should have been built.
* What: Killer Dana Cruise.
* When: 7 p.m. today, 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; through August. In September, Sundays only.
* Where: Orange County Marine Institute, 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive, Dana Point.
* Whereabouts: Exit Interstate 5 at Pacific Coast Highway; go west. Turn left onto Dana Point Harbor Drive.
* Wherewithal: $11; $8 for ages 4 through 12. Children under age 4 not admitted.
* Where to call: (714) 496-2274.
