Truncated Prices on Elephant-Ware

SAN DIEGO — With one day left for the Republican National Convention, some vendors selling partisan souvenirs were marking down their prices Wednesday to unload their inventory, even though there were large crowds in their room at the convention center.
Vendors pushing traditional banners and bumper stickers competed for sales against those selling Republican plates, scarves, ties and even wooden elephants handcrafted in Kenya.
“Clinocchio, will he ever stop lying?” said one T-shirt depicting President Clinton with a long nose.
Louis Taxin, 35, said he was selling two T-shirts for $20 after starting the convention selling them for $12.99 each. Gail Cuthbertson, a wholesaler and retailer of fashion jewelry, marked down some of her items by as much as 50%.
She said sales were OK, but she had so far sold about $4,500 worth of merchandise, far less than the $20,000 she had hoped to make.
