NORTH HOLLYWOOD — An Amtrak passenger train struck and killed an unidentified woman Wednesday, authorities said.
Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department went to the 6800 block of Vineland Avenue shortly after noon, said Bob Collis, a spokesman for the department. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
Initially, authorities could not determine the person’s gender because of severe trauma to the body, said Los Angeles Police Sgt. Christopher Vasquez of the North Hollywood division.
A few hours later, the body was identified as that of a woman, according to Larry Reiche, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Her age and identity, however, had not yet been determined, he said.
It was not known why the woman was in the path of the train, according to officials.
Such deaths are sometimes suicides, authorities said, but they did not have enough information yet to determine if the woman killed herself.
