Cambodia Says Rebel Faction Allowed Attack

BATTAMBANG, Cambodia — Cambodia said Sunday that a breakaway faction of the Khmer Rouge allowed government troops to freely attack guerrillas still loyal to hard-line leader Pol Pot.

Cambodian forces killed two Pol Pot loyalists, wounded seven and captured two in the raid Thursday about 100 miles northwest of Phnom Penh, government spokesman Khieu Khanarith said.

Guerrillas loyal to Ieng Sary, leader of a dissident faction of the Khmer Rouge, did not try to stop the government attack, he said.

Sary broke from the Khmer Rouge last month to seek reconciliation with the government. He had been the No. 2 Khmer Rouge leader during its 1975-79 rule.
