‘Sleepers’ Has Get-Up and Go at Box Office

The dark revenge drama “Sleepers,” with an all-star cast including Brad Pitt, Dustin Hoffman and Robert De Niro, was the No. 1 box-office attraction for a second week, industry estimates showed Sunday.
“Sleepers” edged out three newcomers in the motion picture Top 10 with $9.7 million in earnings, according to estimates by studio and industry sources. The final box-office tally will be released today.
The Jon Lovitz comedy “High School High,” a parody on life inside a tough city school, debuted in second place with a $7-million take, followed in third by the new dieting horror movie, “Stephen King’s Thinner,” with $5.8 million.
Three movies took in about $4.4 million each to tie for fourth, led by the debut of Whoopi Goldberg’s latest comedy “The Associate.” It was followed by the Goldie Hawn-Bette Midler-Diane Keaton comedy “The First Wives Club,” still strong with $88.7 million in total receipts, and the Michael Douglas-Val Kilmer adventure “The Ghost and the Darkness,” which has earned $26.8 million so far.
“The Long Kiss Goodnight” was seventh with $4.1 million, “Michael Collins” was eighth with $2.5 million, “That Thing You Do!” was ninth with $2.1 million, and “D3: The Mighty Ducks” was 10th with $1.8 million.
