Duck update--They are 2-2-1 with a much-improved power play since left wing Paul Kariya returned from a lower abdominal injury that sidelined him for the season’s first 11 games. Kariya has three goals and three assists in five games. The power play, scoring at a rate of less than 9% two weeks ago, is clicking at a 19.2% conversion rate (five for 26) in the past five games.
Star update--Dallas leads the all-time series, 9-4, mainly because the Duck forwards are overmatched by the Stars’ bigger, stronger defensemen such as Derian Hatcher. Center Mike Modano is off to a tremendous start, leading the Stars with 16 points (six goals, 10 assists) and a plus-minus rating of plus 12. Hatcher and Modano played for Duck Coach Ron Wilson on the U.S. team that won the World Cup of Hockey in September.
