Iowa State and Xavier No Longer Unbeaten

The ranks of the unbeaten dwindled again Tuesday night.
Marquette got 20 points from Aaron Hutchins, a key steal from Anthony Pieper in the final seconds and held No. 4 Iowa State to 37.5% shooting in winning, 67-64, in a nonconference game at Ames, Iowa.
Darnell Hoskins scored a 30 points for Dayton, which upset No. 12 Xavier, 98-91, in an Atlantic 10 game at Dayton, Ohio.
The losses leave No. 1 Kansas (14-0), No. 2 Wake Forest (10-0) and No. 17 Oregon (10-0) as the only unbeaten teams in Division I.
Marquette (10-2) played exactly the kind of defense Iowa State Coach Tim Floyd had feared.
“It was the type of game that we expected it to be,” Floyd said. “We knew that it was going to be a struggle getting the ball in the basket. They’re a tremendous defensive club.”
Marquette rallied from a seven-point deficit early in the second half, then held off the Cyclones (10-1).
In the other game, Xavier (10-1, 1-1 and off to its best start in school history) pulled within five points with 33 seconds remaining, but Gary Lumpkin missed a three-point attempt and the Flyers (6-4, 1-1) got the rebound. Darnell Williams then fouled Hoskins, and he made two free throws to put the game out of reach.
Lenny Brown had 29 points, including five three-point baskets, for Xavier.
No. 3 Kentucky 90, Mississippi State 61--Derek Anderson scored 10 of his 26 points during a 12-2 run that sparked the Wildcats (13-1, 2-0) to a Southeastern Conference victory over the Bulldogs (7-8, 1-1) at Lexington, Ky.
Mississippi State turned the ball over a season-high 31 times.
No. 5 Clemson 86, No. 10 Duke 82--Terrell McIntyre scored 17 points and the Tigers (13-1, 2-0) used an 8-0 run to take control in overtime for an Atlantic Coast Conference victory over the Blue Devils (11-3, 2-1), who had a a shot at winning at the end of regulation at Clemson, S.C.
Duke’s Greg Newton fumbled away a pass from Steve Wojciechowski after being left along under the basket with 2.8 seconds left. Clemson went on to win its ninth in a row, and snapped Duke’s winning streak at six games.
Trajan Langdon had 25 points for Duke.
No. 23 Boston College 94, Syracuse 83--Danya Abrams scored 28 points at Syracuse, N.Y., as the Eagles (9-2, 4-1) dropped the Orangemen (8-6, 0-4) to their worst start in their 18 years in the Big East.
Jason Cipolla had 28 points for Syracuse.
OTHER GAMES
Iowa (12-3, 3-0) withstood a flurry of Purdue (6-6, 1-1) three-point baskets and used two field goals by Andre Woolridge (20 points) in the closing seconds to overcome a two-point deficit for a 59-56 Big Ten victory in West Lafayette, Ind. . . . Victor Page scored 27 points as Georgetown (10-3, 3-2) took advantage of Notre Dame’s 24 turnovers for a 70-57 Big East victory at Landover, Md. The Irish fell to 7-5, 1-3. . . . Colorado (11-3, 2-0) ended a 25-game losing streak at Columbia, Mo., getting 28 points from Chauncey Billups in an 87-78 Big 12 victory over Missouri (8-6, 0-2).
