Gilbert Shows He’s Already in Midseason Form

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. — Gibby Gilbert doesn’t consider himself a fast starter on the Senior PGA Tour.
That’s why he was hard-pressed to explain the five-under-par 66 he shot Saturday, giving him a one-stroke lead heading into the final round of the Royal Caribbean Classic.
“It normally takes me longer to get started out here--sometimes three or four starts,” Gilbert said after moving to the top of the leaderboard in the second round of the tour’s first event this year.
Gilbert’s 66 gave him a six-under 136, one shot ahead of Dave Eichelberger, who had a 67. David Graham, Isao Aoki and DeWitt Weaver are at 138. Each shot 68.
Five players stood at 139, including rookie Hubert Green, who matched Gilbert’s 66, and Jim Colbert, last year’s money leader and player of the year.
First-round leader Chi Chi Rodriguez slipped to a 75, and fell six strokes back.
