Former NAACP head Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., a United Church of Christ minister and lead organizer of the Million Man March, has joined the Nation of Islam. Chavis, 49, announced his conversion before a cheering crowd at the group’s annual Savior’s Day festivities in Chicago. “This is not a political decision, it is not an economic decision, it is a spiritual decision,” he said. Chavis was named executive director of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People in 1993. He was fired in 1994 for allocating more than $300,000 in NAACP funds to quiet sexual harassment allegations against him.
