Sentencing of Moore Delayed for 3rd Time

A federal judge on Wednesday delayed a sentencing hearing for former Compton City Councilwoman Patricia Moore, saying that she deserves a chance to read newly filed court documents and time to recover from emotional duress.
It was the third time that U.S. District Judge Consuelo B. Marshall has postponed the hearing in response to requests from Moore’s lawyers. Moore, who was convicted in October of extortion and tax offenses, appeared in court wearing a neck brace and using a cane.
Her lawyer said Moore was unprepared for sentencing because she is suffering from “extreme depression” and because she injured herself in a fall when she went to visit a psychiatrist six weeks ago.
Moore’s lawyer also said his client has not read all of the pre-sentencing documents that he and federal prosecutors have filed in court.
Marshall said Moore is entitled to a chance to read the documents before she is sentenced, and postponed the hearing until May 12. It was initially scheduled for Jan. 6. Marshall said she expected that the delay granted Wednesday would be the last one.
Prosecutors have recommended that Moore be sentenced to 57 months in prison. Moore’s attorneys say she should be sentenced to probation.
