Knee Injury Sidelines Tettleton

Designated hitter Mickey Tettleton of the Texas Rangers will be sidelined at least two weeks because of a knee injury suffered running to first base Tuesday night against the Chicago White Sox.

Team physician Dr. John Conway examined Tettleton’s left knee Wednesday and diagnosed the injury as a deep bone bruise on the inside part of the knee. There was no cartilage or ligament damage.

Tettleton did not accompany the team to Kansas City for its two-game series but remains on the active roster.

Outfielder Warren Newson will be sent today to double-A Tulsa for a medical rehabilitation assignment. He was expected to play for the Drillers today and Friday before returning to Texas.

Newson has been on the disabled list because of a strained left calf muscle suffered opening day. He is eligible to be activated Sunday.

The Detroit Tigers activated infielder/outfielder Phil Nevin from the 15-day disabled list and designated outfielder Vince Coleman for assignment.

Nevin, a Cal State Fullerton standout, has been disabled since March 21 because of a sprained left wrist and recently completed a rehabilitation assignment at Class A Lakeland (.556 average in three games) and triple-A Toledo (.156 in five games).

Nevin, 26, has 10 homers and 31 RBI in 67 total games with Detroit from 1995-96 after originally coming up with the Houston Astros for 18 in 1995.

Coleman, invited to spring training as a non-roster player, has hit .071 with no homers or RBI in six games.
