They Won Their MTV: Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey and Claire Danes were big winners at the 1997 MTV Movie Awards, which will be shown Thursday at 9 p.m. on MTV. Best movie went to “Scream.” Cruise won best male performance for “Jerry Maguire.” Danes won best female performance for “William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.” Matthew McConaughey received the breakthrough performance award for “A Time to Kill.” Jim Carrey took home best villain and best comedic performance for “The Cable Guy.” Bush’s “Machinehead” from “Scream” won best song. Best on-screen duo went to Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery in “The Rock.” Will Smith and Vivica A. Fox received best kiss honors. Fairuza Balk and Robin Tunney won best fight for “The Craft.” Director Doug Liman of “Swingers” received the best new filmmaker award and the lifetime achievement award went to “Star Wars’ ” Chewbacca. The awards ceremony, hosted by Mike Myers, was held Saturday night.
Even More Movie Awards: New York University student Mark Millhone received the gold medal award for his drama “Christmas in New York” at the 24th annual Student Academy Awards Sunday at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The film, about a mugging at Christmas, was one of 10 films from eight colleges and universities that received awards.

New DGA Prez: TV and film director Jack Shea (“The Waltons,” “Designing Women”) was elected Saturday as president of the Directors Guild of America. Formerly the guild’s secretary-treasurer, Shea ran unopposed. Shea succeeds Gene Reynolds (“MASH”), who chose not to seek a third term.
Road to Yorba Linda: Bob Hope, who recently celebrated his 94th birthday, dedicated the Pat Nixon Amphitheater at the Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace Sunday with his wife, Dolores. They were joined by Julie Nixon Eisenhower and David Eisenhower, the late president’s daughter and son-in-law. Hope arrived in a golf cart and stayed to sign copies of his latest book, “Dear Prez, I Wanna Tell Ya.” Dolores Hope signed her new album, “That’s Love.” Last week, the House adopted a resolution that would make the British-born comedian an honorary veteran.

HBO Schedule: This month, HBO is launching “The 11th Hour,” a new summer programming schedule that debuts some of the network’s original series at 11 p.m. Beginning June 11, the new anthology series “Perversions of Science’ will air Wednesday at 11 p.m. The comedy series “Arli$$” will air Tuesdays at 11 p.m., beginning June 24. The new drama “Oz,” from Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana, will air Mondays beginning July 14. HBO’s acclaimed “America Undercover” documentaries will continue to air Thursdays at 11 p.m.

The Scoop on Snoop: Rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg, gearing up for Lollapalooza ‘97, will release an eight-song EP in conjunction with the tour, which kicks off June 25 in West Palm Beach, Fla., and includes an Aug. 17 stop at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre. “Doggumentary,” tentatively scheduled to be released in July, includes four new tracks, including the recently released radio single “Midnight Love,” and four remixes of songs from Snoop’s 1996 album, “Tha Doggfather,” including a reworking of “Snoopbounce” on which the rapper is joined by L.A. rock band Rage Against the Machine.
Music, Music, Music: The Songwriters’ Hall of Fame, the only national organization devoted to the preservation of popular music, will hold its 28th annual Induction Ceremony and Awards dinner tonight at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers. Among those to be honored are Joni Mitchell, Phil Spector, Vic Damone and Alan and Marilyn Bergman.

Time magazine is reporting that TV producer Steven Bochco and his wife, actress Barbara Bosson (“Hill St. Blues” and “Murder One”), have separated after 29 years of marriage and two children. A spokesman for Bochco says the separation was amicable “and they would like to be left alone.” . . . London’s Daily Mirror Monday quoted doctors as saying that Jerry Hall, wife of Rolling Stones rocker Mick Jagger, is three months pregnant. Jagger’s spokesman said he “had no information” about the reports. Jagger and Hall, who have three children ages 4 to 13, separated last year because of his publicized infidelities. But Jagger returned to her and his family last October. . . . Ann Miller hosts the West Coast premiere of the cabaret dinner show “Judy Garland . . . a Night in the Life,” tonight at Arbuckle’s. The evening, which coincides with Garland’s 75th birthday, benefits LIFE Institute/Lobby, an organization for gay, lesbian and HIV-affected communities civil rights. The show will continue through June 21.
