Volunteers Sought to Counsel Teen Parents
- Share via
Volunteers are needed to work in the Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center’s Welcome Baby program.
The program matches teenage parents with volunteers who act as role models and mentors. Volunteers also teach basic baby-care techniques and offer guidance to young parents who have no experience and no support system, center officials said.
There is a shortage of volunteers in La Habra, Fullerton and Buena Park and a lengthy waiting list of teen parents who would like to participate in the program.
The program encourages parents to finish high school and work toward self-sufficiency. It is funded by United Way and a grant from the Insuring the Children Foundation.
Volunteers must commit to three or four hours of service per week. Seniors, retired nurses, teachers and Spanish-speaking mentors are uniquely qualified to serve, but anyone who has an interest in the health and welfare of infants is encouraged to sign up.
