Todd Erdos (1-0) pitched the 12th inning for his first major league victory.
The Padres led, 3-1, through eight innings. But closer Trevor Hoffman gave up four runs in the ninth, capped by Delino DeShields’ two-run homer that gave St. Louis a 5-3 lead.
Dennis Eckersley then blew the save by allowing three hits, including Gwynn’s two-out double into the gap in left-center that scored Gomez and Greg Vaughn, who both reached on singles.
