Kennedy’s Garland Signs With Cubs

The Chicago Cubs announced Tuesday that they agreed to contract terms with their No. 1 pick in the recent free-agent draft, right-handed pitcher Jon Garland from Kennedy High in Granada Hills.
Garland, the 10th pick overall, will graduate this month. He signed for a $1.325-million bonus along with $140,000 for school.
Garland, 6-foot-5 and 198 pounds, will report to the Cub rookie team in Mesa, Ariz., later this month.

San Diego put utility infielder Craig Shipley on the 15-day disabled list for the second time this season, this time because of a strained right hip. The Padres activated outfielder Chris Jones, who had been on the DL since May 22 because of a strained muscle in his side. . . . The New York Mets announced the signing of 12 of their 58 draft picks, including second baseman Anthony Valentine, the nephew of Manager Bobby Valentine.
