Dance to Raise Funds for Student Awards

The Westside Community Council’s Soul Committee will hold its annual “Ten Cents a Dance” event Sunday to raise money for student awards.

The dance will be held from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 83 S. Palm St., in Ventura.

Admission is $5, and proceeds will go to awards for eight neighborhood students for outstanding citizenship and scholarship.

Women will buy tickets--costing 10 to 20 cents--to dance with the men of their choice.

Some men, if they are very special or very suave, may charge more.

“Councilman Jim Friedman is planning to be there,” said Soul Committee co-chairwoman Maxine Culp. “He says he will be expensive.”

Music will range from ballroom tunes to rumba, tango and cha-cha melodies. Mark Douglas and the Notables will provide the tunes.

“There aren’t that many guys who can do the tango, so I would definitely pay more for that,” Culp said.

Prizes will be awarded to the men who collect the most money.

The Soul Committee’s activities include providing support for the Ventura Avenue Library, maintenance for the Avenue Green Plaza and Outstanding Achievement Awards to neighborhood students.

This year’s award recipients will be Ashley Fernow and Erick Leal of Holy Cross Elementary School, Christopher Denharder and Elizabeth Ashby of De Anza Middle School, Thien Truong and Melissa Lunsford of E.P. Foster Elementary and Lee Ann Weatherford and Bobbie Jo Hulsey of Sheridan Way Elementary.
