Pedestrian Warning Lights to Be Installed

Ever screech to a stop after belatedly spotting a pedestrian crossing the road? If so, West Hollywood has plans for you.

The city is installing sensors under three crosswalks. The sensors will be connected to amber lights embedded in the street, said Walter Davis, engineering assistant for city’s Department of Transportation. When a pedestrian crosses, the lights, which are visible up to 300 feet away, will flash, he said.

In several cities that have similar systems in place, motorists have approached the intersections more slowly, he said. The experimental lights, which are expected to be installed by late August, will be placed where Sunset Boulevard intersects Alta Loma Road, Wetherly Drive and Sunset Plaza. The $60,000 cost is being financed by the city.
