Flyway Won’t Run in Del Mar Handicap

Associated Press

Flyway, a fast-closing second to Marlin in Hollywood Park’s Sunset Handicap on July 20, won’t run as planned in Saturday’s $250,000 Del Mar Handicap because of a tendon injury.

Flyway, a 4-year-old colt bred in France, hurt his left foreleg during a gallop at Del Mar on Sunday--the same day Marlin went wire to wire to win the Arlington Million.

“He had been training great, it’s quite a blow,” trainer Ben Cecil said. “We’ll give him some time off and see what happens.”

Among those expected to run in Saturday’s 1 3/8-mile race on turf are Escondido Handicap winner Dowty, who has been assigned high weight of 119 pounds, and Hollywood Turf Cup winner Rainbow Dancer, who will carry 118 pounds.
