1. MICHIGAN (11-0) BEAT OHIO STATE, 20-14.
The victory gave the Wolverines their first perfect regular season since 1971, their first Rose Bowl berth since the 1992 season and a shot at their first national title since 1948. Next: Washington State in Rose Bowl.
2. FLORIDA STATE (10-1) LOST TO FLORIDA, 32-29
The Seminoles, whose 52-20 loss to the Gators in last January’s Sugar Bowl cost them the national championship, had those hopes damaged again in this loss. Florida State, which came into the game with 64 sacks, had none. Next: Alliance bowl game.
3. NEBRASKA (10-0) DID NOT PLAY.
The Cornhuskers’ national title hopes received a big boost with No. 2 Florida State’s loss. Nebraska still has two games remaining before the bowl season, including the Big 12 championship game against Texas A&M.; Next: at Colorado, Friday.
4. OHIO STATE (10-2) LOST TO MICHIGAN, 20-14.
The previous two seasons the Wolverines spoiled Buckeye bids for perfect seasons, but Ohio State couldn’t return the favor this year. Buckeye Coach John Cooper is 1-8-1 against Michigan. Next: Probable non-alliance bowl game.
5. TENNESSEE (9-1) BEAT KENTUCKY, 59-31.
Peyton Manning enhanced his bid to win the Heisman Trophy by completing 25 of 35 passes for 523 yards and five touchdowns. The victory was the Volunteers’ 13th in a row over the Wildcats. Next: Vanderbilt, Saturday.
6. PENN STATE (9-1) BEAT WISCONSIN, 35-10.
The Nittany Lions stayed in line for a major bowl bid as Mike McQueary was 16 of 19 for 269 yards and three touchdowns--one a Hail Mary play to Joe Jurevicius with one second left in the first half. Next: at Michigan State, Saturday.
7. UCLA (9-2) BEAT USC, 31-24.
The Bruins appear Cotton Bowl-bound after winning their ninth consecutive game and defeating the Trojans for the seventh year in a row. Cade McNown had three touchdown passes to boost his season total to 22. Next: Probable non-alliance bowl game.
8. NORTH CAROLINA (10-1) BEAT DUKE, 50-14.
“If this team does not go to an alliance bowl, then the system is not working,” said Tar Heel Coach Mack Brown after his team scored 50 unanswered points to record the school’s fifth 10-win season in 107 years.Next: Probable non-alliance bowl game.
9. KANSAS STATE (10-1) BEAT IOWA STATE, 28-3.
Quarterback Mike Bishop accounted for three touchdowns and Mike Lawrence became the school’s career rushing leader as the Wildcats completed their first 10-victory regular season since 1910. Next: Probable non-alliance bowl game.
10. FLORIDA (9-2) BEAT FLORIDA STATE, 32-29.
A 63-yard pass play from Doug Johnson to Jacquez Green set up Fred Taylor’s fourth touchdown run--and the game’s decisive score--with 1:50 left. Taylor had 162 yards against the nation’s top-ranked run defense.Next: Non-alliance bowl game.
11. WASHINGTON ST. (10-1) BEAT WASHINGTON, 41-35.
The Cougars will be going to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1931 as a result of this win, and a 37-34 season-opening victory over UCLA. Ryan Leaf threw for 358 yards and two touchdowns. Next: Michigan in Rose Bowl.
12. ARIZONA STATE (8-2) DID NOT PLAY.
The defending Pac-10 champion Sun Devils were hoping that they would be able to play Friday for a Rose Bowl berth, but UCLA took them out of the picture with its victory over USC. Arizona State appears to be Fiesta Bowl-bound. Next: Arizona, Friday.
13. AUBURN (9-2) BEAT ALABAMA, 18-17
Jaret Holmes’ 39-yard field goal with 15 seconds left gave the Tigers the SEC Western Division title and a berth in the conference championship game. Last year, Alabama scored late to defeat Auburn.Next: SEC championship game.
14. GEORGIA (8-2) BEAT MISSISSIPPI, 21-14.
Robert Edwards had 105 of his 180 rushing yards in the first half, scoring once and setting up the other two touchdowns as the Bulldogs kept alive their hopes of getting into the SEC championship game. Next: at Georgia Tech, Saturday.
15. MISSISSIPPI STATE (7-3) LOST TO ARKANSAS, 17-7.
The Bulldogs, who started in the day in control of their SEC Western Division destiny, lost a chance to get into the conference championship game with this loss and Auburn’s victory over Alabama. Next: Mississippi, Saturday.
16. TEXAS A&M; (8-2) DID NOT PLAY.
The Aggies’ traditional Thanksgiving game basically comes down to this--can they keep the Longhorns’ Ricky Williams from going over 200 yards rushing? Texas A&M; has already clinched a berth in the Big 12 championship game. Next: Texas, Thursday.
17. WASHINGTON (7-4) LOST TO WASHINGTON ST., 41-35.
The Huskies had their season come crashing down. The Huskies, who at one time entertained thoughts of a national championship, lost their final three games to finish fourth in the Pac-10. Next: Bowl game to be announced.
18. SYRACUSE (8-3) DID NOT PLAY.
The Orangemen, thanks to Pittsburgh’s upset of Virginia Tech Saturday, can win the Big East championship and gain an alliance bowl berth with a victory next weekend. Syracuse has won seven games in a row. Next: at Miami (Fla.), Saturday.
19. VIRGINIA TECH (7-3) LOST TO PITTSBURGH, 30-23.
The Hokies probably lost a chance to win the Big East championship and $7 million by not being able to go to a major bowl with this defeat. To go to a major bowl, Virginia Tech needs Syracuse to lose next weekend. Next: at Virginia, Saturday.
20. LOUISIANA STATE (7-3) DID NOT PLAY.
That loss to Notre Dame at Baton Rouge, La., last weekend is probably still bothering the Tigers, who figure to come out roaring in their regular-season finale. Next: Arkansas, Friday.
21. MISSOURI (7-4) DID NOT PLAY.
The Tigers overcame a lot to get this far and their reward will be their first bowl game in 14 seasons. Quarterback Corby Jones and tailback Brock Olivo gave Missouri one of the nation’s top running tandems.Next: Bowl game to be announced.
22. WEST VIRGINIA (7-3) LOST TO NOTRE DAME, 21-14.
Tailback Amos Zereoue, one of the nation’s best-kept secrets, had 234 yards rushing and two touchdowns but the Mountaineers ran into one of the nation’s hottest teams and lost. Next: Pittsburgh, Friday.
23. PURDUE (8-3) BEAT INDIANA, 56-7.
Ed Watson rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns as the Boilermakers qualified for a bowl game for the first time since 1984, when Jim Everett was their quarterback. Next: Bowl game to be announced.
24. WISCONSIN (8-4) LOST TO PENN STATE, 35-10
Tailback Ron Dayne, who played on a gimpy right ankle, ran for 126 yards in 30 carries for the Badgers, who were the last Big Ten team without a loss in Penn State’s Beaver Stadium. Next: Bowl game to be announced.
25. COLORADO ST. (9-2) BEAT SAN DIEGO ST., 38-17
Moses Moreno threw three touchdown passes in the second quarter as the Rams won their seventh consecutive game and clinched the WAC Pacific Division championship. Next: New Mexico in WAC championship game.
