Robbie Coppola ran for three touchdowns in the first half, leading Calabasas High to a 30-14 upset over top-seeded and defending champion St. Bonaventure in a Southern Section Division X first-round playoff game Saturday night at Ventura High.
Coppola, who missed the previous two games because of injuries, opened the scoring on the Coyotes’ first possession, going over from five yards to cap a 17-play, 76-yard drive. It was the first touchdown the St. Bonaventure defense had given up in 25 quarters.
Calabasas took a 10-0 lead on David Rosenberg’s 58-yard field goal early in the second quarter.
The score was set up by the first of Shawn Abdi’s two interceptions. Abdi returned his second interception 44 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter, giving the Coyotes (7-4) a 30-6 lead.
Coppola, who finished with 108 yards in 25 carries, scored on two one-yard runs in the second quarter, the last coming with 11 seconds remaining in the half. It was his 21st touchdown of the season.
St. Bonaventure quarterback Chris Lombardo had cut its deficit to 17-6 when he scored on a 22-yard run late in the second quarter.
Lombardo, who completed 16 of 35 for 148 yards, threw a four-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to Matt Leeth for the game’s final score.
