Smoke From Controlled Burn Is Safe, Firm Says

A controlled burn Thursday afternoon at the Chevron refinery sent a cloud of ugly black smoke into the sky over the plant and drifting south over homes in Manhattan Beach, but a company official said the smoke posed no health hazard.

The black smoke was produced by the intentional burn-off of a gas produced in the refining process, company spokesman Rod Spackman said. Smoke began pouring out of a pipe called a “flare” about 2:15 p.m. Within an hour, it stopped.

The smoke “doesn’t pose any hazard other than it creates a visual problem,” Spackman said.
