Saddleback Trustees Vote to Back Prop. 227

Trustees in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District have adopted a resolution opposing Proposition 227, the June ballot measure seeking to end bilingual education statewide.
In a 4-1 vote, the majority said it was concerned about what affect the measure would have, if passed, on the district’s two-way language immersion program for English- and Spanish-speaking children.

Bilingual Education Vote--A headline Saturday incorrectly stated a vote by trustees with the Saddleback Valley Unified School District. The board voted to adopt a resolution opposing Proposition 227, the June ballot measure seeking to end bilingual education statewide.
About two dozen parents and their children, who are enrolled in the immersion program at Gates Elementary School, applauded the school district for its position.
Trustee Debbie Hughes voted against the resolution. She said she supports the dual immersion program but believes the initiative would not harm the voluntary program.
