Berneta A. Bolen, a 50-year county resident, died Tuesday. She was 88.
Bolen was born April 2, 1910, in Canton, Ill. In 1947, Bolen moved with her husband to Santa Barbara, where she lived for a year before moving to Ventura, her daughter said.
“My father wanted to come out here and get away from the snow,” said Bolen’s daughter, Irene Williams of Moorpark.
Bolen was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon.
Bolen lived in Ventura from 1948 to 1987. She worked as a cashier at the former Woolworth’s on Main Street and also served as a secretary in her husband’s home-based food and package delivery business, Williams said.
In 1987, Bolen bought a trailer and moved next door to her daughter in Moorpark, Williams said.
Throughout her life, Bolen was active in the women’s division of the Odd Fellows. She enjoyed making hook rugs and crocheting, and she and her husband were avid bridge players, Williams said.
“She was a very happy person,” Williams said. “People always commented on how she laughed all the time. She had a very good heart.”
In addition to Irene, Bolen is survived by a son, Vernon D. Bolen of Birmingham, Ala.; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura. Interment will be at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
