Sylmar Gets Lift and Upends Poly

Ervin Gonzalez and Mario Moran returned in a big way for Sylmar High in a 15-8, 15-12, 15-7 upset of conference-leading Poly in a Valley Pac-8 boys’ volleyball match Wednesday at Sylmar.
Gonzalez, who missed three weeks with a rotator cuff injury, had 16 kills and four aces for Sylmar (5-4, 3-3 in conference play). Moran, in his first game this season after being academically ineligible, had eight kills.
James Word had 17 kills for Poly (7-2, 5-1).
North Hollywood d. Grant, 15-12, 8-15, 10-15, 15-9, 15-12--Greg Roller had 19 kills and Jimmy Phan had 26 assists for the Huskies (4-5, 2-4) in a victory at Grant.
Ron Ruiz had 31 kills for Grant.
Canoga Park d. Reseda, 15-7, 15-4, 15-1--Philip Mramor had 11 kills and Nghiem Dinh had 12 assists and nine digs and the Hunters (6-3, 3-3) won at Canoga Park.
Quartz Hill d. Highland, 15-8, 15-9, 17-15--Justin Munz had 14 kills and seven blocks for the Rebels (7-1, 3-0) in a Golden League victory at Highland.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Agoura 14, Newbury Park 4--Dustin Erb swept at No. 1 singles for the Chargers (10-2, 7-1) in a Marmonte League victory at Newbury Park (3-7, 1-5).
Westlake 17, Thousand Oaks 1--Darren Joe swept at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, for the Warriors (8-0, 7-0) in a Marmonte League victory at North Ranch Country Club.
Erik Janson and Alex Yaftali also swept in singles for the Warriors, ranked fifth in the Southern Section Division II poll.
Calabasas 17, Nordhoff 1--Jon Yee and Brad Gold won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 doubles for the Coyotes (10-2, 2-0) in a Frontier League match at Nordhoff.
North Hollywood 4, Grant 3--Jason Potell beat Jorge Flores, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, to clinch a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory for the Huskies (5-5, 4-2) at North Hollywood.
GIRLS’ SWIMMING
Granada Hills 132, Canoga Park 23--Jennifer Parmenter won the 200 freestyle in 1:53.81 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.50, and Granada Hills won every event in an East Valley League meet at Cal State Northridge.
Crescenta Valley 114, Arcadia 56--Freshmen Tawne Fishback and Alexis Sheridan each won two individual events and swam on two victorious relay teams for the Falcons (6-0, 3-0), who beat the Apaches for the first time in a Pacific League meet.
BOYS’ SWIMMING
Crescenta Valley 103, Arcadia 67--Kenny Carpenter won the 200 freestyle in 1:49.18 and the 100 butterfly in 55.90 for the Falcons (6-0, 3-0) in a Pacific League victory.
