The city has purchased two all-terrain wheelchairs to allow disabled beach-goers to get closer to the water.
The city will offer the wheelchairs free at two Perry’s Pizza locations at 2400 Ocean Front Walk and 1200 Pacific Coast Highway, said Beach Manager Judith Meister.
The lightweight chairs, which cost $2,300 each, are equipped with broad rubber tires that can go across sand without sinking, Meister said.
Users will be required to leave identification such as a driver’s license or passport to obtain the wheelchairs, which are available for two hours at a time, she said.
The city may purchase two more of the wheelchairs if demand is high, she said.
Reservations are not required but can be made by calling (310) 452-7609 (2400 Ocean Front Walk) or (310) 458-3975 (1200 Pacific Coast Highway.)
