On paper, this looks like a winner with four of the most recognizable names in the business--pianist Chick Corea, guitarist Pat Metheny, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Roy Haynes--joining the vibraphonist in a smart selection of material penned by Metheny, Corea and its leader, with a single George Gershwin tune thrown in for good measure. But there’s too much gentlemanly play and too little chance taking on this mostly languid affair. Still, the blend of Burton’s vibes with guitar and keyboard makes for some deep harmonic moments and the occasional individual effort, along with pushy rhythm section play from Haynes and Holland, makes this an interesting project, even though it doesn’t completely live up to expectations.
