HIV Advisory Group to Meet With Council

For the first time since its founding a decade ago, the city’s HIV Advisory Committee today will hold a joint meeting with the City Council.
The committee, like the treatment of HIV and AIDS, is undergoing a transformation, which it wants to share with the council, said the Rev. Tari Lennon of Neighborhood Congregational Church. She is chairwoman of the committee, which was formed to educate the public about the disease and establish a clearinghouse of information for residents diagnosed with it.
Medicine now allows patients to live longer than they ever thought possible, she said. So the committee wants to focus on job retraining and counseling for patients who are managing a long-term illness.
Laguna Beach once had the highest per capita number of AIDS patients nationwide. About 500 residents have the disease, Lennon said.
