Matadors Fall Short Against Fullerton

Adam Johnson struck out Mike McNeely to end the game with the tying runs on base for Cal State Northridge in a 6-4 nonconference baseball loss Tuesday night at Cal State Fullerton.
Jeff Martin (2-2) took the loss by allowing a home run by Aaron Rowand in the eighth inning that broke a 3-3 tie, then Eric Fuller came on and gave up a double to Chris Beck that was followed by Pete Fukuhara’s home run for the Titans (11-6).
Northridge starter Jim DeBiase gave up a two-run double to Reed Johnson in the third inning, but the Matadors (11-13) bounced back in the fourth with a home run by Kevin Patrick and a two-run shot by Jaime Hay to take a 3-2 lead. Patrick also singled, extending his hitting streak to 13 games.
Cal Lutheran 8, UC San Diego 7--Brian Malchow hit a one-out home run in the ninth inning to give host Cal Lutheran (9-2) a come-from-behind nonconference victory.
The Kingsmen trailed, 7-2, after five innings.
Joe Jauregui hit a two-run home run during a four-run seventh-inning rally for Cal Lutheran, and former Notre Dame High standout Rich Igou (2-1) pitched the final two innings to earn the victory, striking out three and walking one.
Mark Mason hit three two-run home runs for the Tritons (5-7).
Pepperdine 13, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 5--Josh Oder’s two-run home run in the third inning got the Waves started in a nonconference game at Pepperdine.
Dave Reed (2-0) pitched five innings in relief of Richard Sundstrom to earn the victory. Chris Cosbey and Steve Zorn had doubles for Pepperdine.
Oxnard 14, Moorpark 2--Matt Pitstick had three hits, and Sean Fossen had a double and triple in three at-bats to pace a 16-hit attack for Oxnard (9-4, 2-1) in a WSC North Division game at Oxnard.
Fossen and Pitstick were among six Oxnard players with doubles. Jay Niremberg was two for two and drove in two runs. Right-hander Carlos Morales (2-2) allowed five hits in seven innings.
Cuesta 13, Ventura 1--Nick Gontmaher doubled in the seventh inning, then scored on a pair of groundouts for Ventura (4-5, 1-2) in a Western State Conference North Division game at Cuesta (12-1, 2-1).
Kyle Jackson pitched a five hitter for Cuesta, striking out four.
Glendale 20, Canyons 9--Freddy Sanchez had a home run and a grand slam for Glendale (9-7, 2-2) in a Western State Conference South Division game at Canyons (10-3, 2-2).
John Camapanella drove in three runs with a home run, a double and two singles for the Vaqueros.
Matt McAfee doubled twice for the Cougars.
Bakersfield 6, Pierce 5--Pierce reliever Merrill Dunn (0-1) allowed three walks and three hits without registering an out in the bottom of the ninth and Bakersfield overcame a 5-3 deficit to win a Western State Conference game at Bakersfield.
Jarrod Hertz had two hits, including a two-run double for Pierce (6-7, 1-2).
