2 Roller Coaster Workers Rescued

Two workers who were painting a support column on the Santa Monica Pier roller coaster ride Wednesday were hit by the coaster, which was undergoing a routine daily test, officials said.
Elfido Guzman, 29, and Mynor Martinez, 30, both of Los Angeles, were about 30 feet above the Santa Monica Westcoaster ride in a cherry-picker lift when the accident occurred about 11:40 a.m., said Genevieve Morrill, a spokeswoman for Pacific Park, the amusement concession on the pier.
A certified ride operator announced the test-run over the public address system as is customary, Morrill said, but did not notice the men in the cherry-picker, who were behind a pillar.
The two men were taken to Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, where they were treated for minor injuries, a hospital spokesman said.
