Nargi Commits to Northridge

Taft High boys’ volleyball player Joe Nargi has committed to Cal State Northridge.

Nargi, a 6-foot-5 opposite hitter who should break the Taft career record for kills this season, said he liked the pitch made by Northridge men’s Coach Jeff Campbell.

“He told me I had a good shot at a starting position and that he envisioned a national championship,” Nargi said.

BASKETBALL

4-A OK: Cara Blumfield of El Camino Real High, Nakeisha Perkins of Grant and Lindsay Sotero-Higa of North Hollywood have been selected to the All-City 4-A Division girls’ team.

Ebony Hoffman of 4-A champion Narbonne was chosen player of the year.

Markia Derby of North Hollywood made the 4-A second team.

Schquay Brignac of Cleveland, Jessica Cosby of Granada Hills, Veronica Ramos of Slymar and Quiana Jeffries of Poly made the 3-A team.

Anica Arriola of San Fernando was a second-team selection. Michelle Tompkins of 3-A Division champion Fairfax was chosen player of the year.

FIGURE SKATING

Chua is second: Andrey Chua, an 11-year-old sixth-grader from Sun Valley who attends St. Genevieve, is in second place at the intermediate level following the completion of the short program at the Junior Olympics in Plano, Texas.

Amanda Magarian of Broadmoor, Colo., is first heading into the long program on Saturday.

FOOTBALL

Murphy steps down: Moorpark College defensive coordinator Dave Murphy has resigned after seven years at the school.

Murphy will continue as girls’ basketball coach at Simi Valley High and join wife Jan in founding a girls’ travel basketball team.

GOLF

Woolf a Wildcat: Brian Woolf, a senior at Alemany High, has committed to Arizona.

SOCCER

Signing up: Cal State Northridge men’s soccer Coach Marwan Ass’ad said the Matadors have signed Moorpark College forward Patrick Russo to a letter of intent.

Russo, a Moorpark High graduate, attended Ohio Weslyan as a freshman before playing last season at Moorpark.
