Spotlight: Payroll Tax Revenue Rises 19% in March

It’s no secret that the employment expansion is fueling the state’s economic growth. The California Chamber of Commerce’s Economic Advisory Council reports that not only was there a 3.7% rise in payroll employment in March, but revenue from payroll taxes was up 19% compared with last year. During the fourth quarter of 1997, job growth was 4.6% in San Diego, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, which have strong footholds in the fast-growing high- technology, tourism and construction sectors.
