Delaine Eastin

It is difficult for me to understand how The Times can endorse Delaine Eastin for superintendent of public instruction (editorial, May 19) when it is openly known that she opposes the new testing process for children in California. Accountability is the rallying cry and test scores are the beginning of accountability.

* Thanks for the careful analysis of the work Eastin has done during her first term. She has helped initiate a much-needed remedial reading and comprehension initiative for grades four through 12.
The second point made was Eastin’s reinstitution of summer school. For those students who need the extra boost, summer school is a real blessing. For the students who want to forge ahead, they can complete their graduation requirements and get a head start on their college work.
Eastin’s call for more accountability of teachers and administrators is a plus for the students and parents.
