Fire Guts Building in Garment District

A fire battled by more than 100 firefighters gutted a two-story commercial building near Los Angeles’ garment district Thursday night.
The fire broke out in the warehouse-style building at Main Street and Pico Boulevard about 9 p.m., said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Jim Wells.
No one was believed to be inside the building but a firefighter suffered a broken finger.
Firefighters initially fought the fire from the roof, but pulled back as it began to cave in. They were hampered in their efforts by bars on the windows. Firefighters fought the blaze by hose to prevent its spread to other buildings.
