Oilers’ Weight Injures Knee

Center Doug Weight of the Edmonton Oilers left Wednesday night’s game against the Washington Capitals after suffering a knee injury, nine days after signing a two-year contract for $7.8 million.
Weight earned his fifth assist in four games during a power play at 14:23 of the first period but left the game, an 8-2 Oiler victory, moments later.
Tests will be conducted today to determine the severity of the injury.

Coach Alain Vigneault was given a one-year contract extension by the Montreal Canadiens, tying him to the club through the 2000-2001 season. . . . The Washington Capitals re-signed free-agent defenseman Andrei Nikolishin to a two-year, $1.9-million contract.
