Vigilante right-hander Mike Smith was named the Western Baseball League’s pitcher of the year for the second consecutive season.
Smith, 27, was 10-6 with a 3.52 earned-run average. He started 20 games and pitched in relief once, striking out 121 in 138 innings. He was fifth in the league in strikeouts, first in complete games (six) and first in shutouts (three).
Joining Smith on the WBL’s all-league first team was Alan Burke, who batted .305 in 90 games with 23 home runs and 92 runs batted in.

Derek Lawther resigned as boys’ soccer coach at Corona del Mar High after three seasons, Athletic Director Jerry Jelnick said. Jelnick said Lawther, a former UC Irvine men’s soccer coach, was leaving the school because he wanted to devote more time to his travel agency. Corona del Mar did not reach the playoffs in any of Lawther’s three seasons.
